Natural Gemstones

What are they?

Gemstones are beautiful minerals that have been processed in jewelry for a long time. A mineral is a compound or simple substance that occurs in nature and is formed by natural (geological) processes. A gemstone can therefore be called a mineral, but is itself also made up of minerals. A sapphire consists of titanium and iron. These are also substances that occur in nature and are formed by natural geological processes . These substances together form a sapphire. A real gemstone is a natural product. A gemstone can be millions to billions of years old, because the formation processes take a very long time.

A gemstone can consist of one or more minerals. If a gemstone consists of only one mineral, it is a crystal . Crystals have a clear shape and pattern. Well-known crystals are amethyst and rock crystal. If a gemstone consists of multiple minerals it is a rock . Rocks are coarser and have no clear pattern and/or no clear shape.
