Psychology and neuroscience show that reading has numerous benefits for our brain and emotional well-being.
Reading offers psychological benefits, including for our imagination and empathy. Readers also experience benefits for cognitive functions such as concentration, memory and attention. Another positive effect is less stress: reading releases “happiness hormones” such as dopamine or oxytocin.
And if that wasn’t enough, numerous studies support the idea that reading slows aging because of its impact on cognitive reserve. Cognitive reserve allows your brain to compensate for damage. This allows you to perform at the same level for longer. The greater your cognitive reserve, the longer it takes for symptoms of dementia and other conditions to occur.
